TZP FOR OSCARS!

Aamir Khan’s tryst with the Oscars continues. After Lagaan in 2001, now it’s the turn of his directorial debut, Taare Zameen Par (TZP) which has been selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars.

TZP that tells the tale of a dyslexic child stars the 9-year-old Darsheel Safary in the lead role. The film was released on 21 December, 2007 and was a huge commercial and critical smasher having bagged rave reviews and major awards. Till date, the film has grossed Rs 135 crore worldwide. The film has been produced by Khan in association with PVR Pictures.

Khan who is currently shooting in Ladakh for Raju Hirani’s 3 Idiots, expressed his elation at the news, “I’m really happy that TZP been selected to represent India at an international forum like the Oscars. It is a film that is extremely close to my heart.” Talking about the theme of the film, Khan said, “It’s a film that first sensitized me as a parent and as a person and then went on to have the same effect on all the audience in India and across the globe. I hope that it has an equally strong impact on the members of the academy as well.”

Producer and director Suneel Darshan led this year’s committee for the Oscars nomination as the chairperson. Other jury members include Bijon Das Gupta, Aruna Raje, Ravi Kotharakara, H M Ramachandran, Sudarshan Rao, Mahesh Kothare, Jagdish Sharma, B R Ishara and Manoj Chaturvedi.

Darshan says, “There were many factors that went in the favour of TZP. It’s a genuinely good film, technically sound and has some great performances. Also it’s a huge direction oriented film. But at the end of the day, the one factor that made TZP a clear cut choice was that anyone who watches the film comes out with a lasting impression!"

The 81st Annual Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2008 will be presented at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, CA on 22 February, 2009....

ARDHNARISHWAR!!

There is no stopping Aamir Khan. Always setting new goals for himself, always experimenting with new styles, this actor of his own kind will next be seen as the mythological half man-half woman ‘Ardhnarishwar‘ in a Tata Sky ad. This ad, the first for the company by Aamir is already on air.

The ad has been conceptualised by the company’s marketing team along with Rediffusion. Bollywood writer-director Neeraj Vohra has directed the ad. This 70 seconds ad will show half of Aamir as a Punjabi girl, and the other half as a boy.

"Many people didn't know that in Tata Sky - Sky stands for the company which is the biggest player in DTH technology in the world market."

"Tata stands for the knowledge of India and trust factor, whereas Sky stands for the knowledge of technology and DTH," Mehra added.

‘We are proud to have Aamir working on the ad and happy with the outcome of the final product. No other actor could have done the same so effectively,’ said Vikram Mehra, chief marketing officer, Tata Sky.

THE CUTE IMRAN!!!

No doubt, till reported market reviews of the movie, ‘Janne Tu… Ya Jaane Na’ has set destiny of Imran Khan to be new rising star of the Bollywood. In his first movie, under uncle Amir Khan’s production that is a college campus story Imran attached some personal elements as well as clothes from his own life to his characters. Even in his speech patterns in the movie he is somehow near to Aamir Khan.

But as this is habit about media that they always tell you something new as reported in some sections of the print media Imran Khan actually is Imran Pal due to her mother being married to an Anil Pal living in London. Nevertheless, see some pictures from Imran’s Childhood.

unconventional jodi!

What an extraordinary combination! You may find Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma a total mismatch, but tis a fact that the duo has been finalized for a film to be produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Production. Apparently, both Ranbir and Konkona liked the script a lot and immediately gave their affirmative nod to it.

The film is about the union of a Punjabi heir-apparent and the Bengali bohemian. The movie will be directed by Ayaan Mukherjee who’s a cousin of Kajol. Ayaan has already assisted Ashutosh Gowariker in ‘Swades’ and Karan Johar in ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’.

Talking about Ranbir and Konkona being a far fetched match, a source says, “That’s exactly the point. In this Mumbai-based romance about urban relationships, the director needed a pair that seems incompatible. The film is about seeking a level of compatibility in a world gone distinctly out of control.”

jab they met!....will they spilt?

Unfortunately, the Saifeena couple who had publicly announced their togetherness at the Lakme Fashion Week last October, sent out all the wrong signals at IIFA. To start with, the duo did not hit Bangkok together, Saif couldn’t be spotted in the audience when Kareena performed on stage, he was not there to cheer her lady when she received the Best Actress Award and Bebo didn’t find him important enough for even a mention in her acknowledgement speech. Instead she said (mark it guys!), “I want to thank three most important people for this award- director Imtiaz Ali, producer Ashtavinayak and…. the most important person, my co-star Shahid Kapoor.”

And not a word about Saif! According to inside sources, Saif was not happy with the skimpy outfit flaunting Kareena’s sexy figure during her performance. He had Manish Malhotra do a rather Indian outfit for her. So, while others like Katrina and Dia Mirza were at their smouldering dress, Kareena’s elaborate dress spoilt the magic for her. Close sources also say that the lack of time together is the culprit for the misunderstanding between the two.

Time or dresses, whatever be the case, do we see some ‘Jab they split….’ coming up soon in our blog.

rajeev can't ignore ekta!

Every one is aware of Rajeev Khandelwal and soap queen Ekta Kapoor's love-hate relationship. Once known as the blue-eyed boy of Balaji telefilms, Rajeev soon makes his Bollywood debut with UTV's Aamir.

Many people know that it was his Bollywood aspirations that made Rajeev quit Kahin toh Hoga, a popular TV soap from the Balaji stable. And that's what was resposbile for his so-called tiff with Ekta Kapoor.

But Rajeev Khandelwal feels he can't ignore Ekta's contribution in his career and so has invited her to a special screening of his debut film Aamir.

Says Rajeev, "This is my first film and hence very important to me. I want Ekta to be there for the premiere. I was remembering all those people because of whom I'm in Mumbai and Ekta is one of them. I just can't ignore her contribution in my career."

But does he really think Ekta will turn up for the screening?
"She's quite unpredictable! Though I'm aware she's busy with her own film which is releasing the same day," replies Rajeev.

When contacted, all Ekta had to say was to wish Rajeev "All the best".
Now let's wait and watch if the Soap Queen makes Rajeev's day or not!

'saif' distance between saifeena!

The ‘inevitable’ has happened. There are cracks in the perfect passion already.
If rumours floating out of the couple’s friendly circle are to be believed, Kareena and Saif are constantly having problems, and it isn’t Saif’s fault, really.

Not yet. Says a source, “Saif is constantly crowding her for attention. Nowadays, he’s only talking to Bebo. Saif has stopped communicating almost completely with all his family and friends.”

He is now constantly pre-occupied with keeping tabs on his lady love, and accompanying her to events which have nothing to do with him, all over the country.

Says the source, “Kareena likes her space. She’s very giving in love, but doesn’t want her man to constantly question her. She gets what-are-you-doing, where-are-you calls from Saif throughout the day. Initially, she enjoyed all the attention. But now it’s begun to tell on her nerves. More than Kareena, it’s her mom Babita who’s worried that Saif’s ceaseless trailing may affect her career.”

Friends say Kareena’s asked Saif to back off a bit. Quite a bit. “Ironically, he used to complain about Rozza’s constant attention. Today, he’s behaving exactly like her. Kareena can’t help but remember Shahid’s easy-does-it, gentle attention,” says the source.

So where does the relationship stand? “Nothing alarming yet. All Saif needs to do is give Bebo the space to find her pace. Otherwise, he’d have to get another girlfriend with a name similar to Kareena so he can get the tattoo re-done without too much pain,” says a friend.

amir launches nephew

Aamir Khan back again to make a hat-trick as far his production is concerned after the success of Lagaan and Taare Zameen Par; both did well in box office. Lately Amir Khan Production has launched a sneak-peak from his upcoming film ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’ as producer featuring his nephew and debutant Imran Khan.

Though not much info of the storyline was revealed so far but ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’ as the promos looks might be something in as usual fashion of Aamir who in his constant endeavour, trying to make meaningful movies.

Directed and written by Abbas Tyrewala the sound score has been goes to the credit of AR Rahman while introducing yet another newbie to Hindi films as Telegu actress Genelia in the role of leading lady. Aamir Khan and Naseeruddin Shah would also be seen doing cameos in the film.

Aamir Khan in his blog talking about Jaane Tu...says, “Abbas who has is an established writer having written films like Munna Bhai MBBS, Maqbool, and Main Hoon Na among others has done a great job as a director. While I was busy with TZP he was doing JT, and when I saw the completed film it was an excellent translation onto screen of the script, which for me is the most imp yardstick for any filmmaker”.

However Mansoor Khan, the well-known producer of Aamir’s debut movie ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’, who was out of film circuit for several years, too came in this production knowing that his cousin Nauzhat’s son Imraan is making his debut in this film.

Aamir says in his blog: “Yes, I finally managed to lure Mansoor out of his hiding place. When I took over as director of TZP I needed a hands-on producer on Jaane Tu so I requested Mansoor. To his credit despite his reluctance he did not hesitate to step in. I would like to think it was because of me but I suspect it was because of Nasir Sahab. Both Mansoor and I know that Nasir Sahab would have wanted the two of us to stand by Imran at this important juncture in his career. So Mansoor makes a return, albeit as Producer”.

The film is expected to be released somewhere in the first week of July.

NO MORE SINGLE!

Vidya Balan couldn’t be happier. “I must say I’m very content in the space I’m occupying right now,” she says, indulging in some frank speak. With a mysterious smile, Vidya suggests she is no longer single and is enjoying it. Vidya says, “The other evening, I went to watch Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak perform Dear Liar at Prithvi theatre.” On being asked who accompanied her, she chuckles, “Ah, it was friend whose name begins with ‘S’. I'm not saying any more than that!”

All this forthright talk without us mentioning Shahid even once! She adds, “I don’t deny that Shahid is a very close friend. For the first time, I’ve worked with a co-star who’s actually closer to me by way of age, experience and temperament. We were together for two months in Toronto shooting Aziz Mirza’s Kismat Connection and we really got along well. I found him very calm and intelligent. I think we’re alike in many ways. I really enjoyed working with him. And I would love to do more films with him.”

She adds, “I’m amazed by the range of men I’ve been linked with. From Pradeep Sarkar it went to Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar, John Abraham and now Shahid. I seem to have been going down the generations until I’ve finally come to a guy who’s my age,” she says. Time to stop here then, Vidya?

the dog fight!

The blog business gets dirty once again. Not long back Aamir Khan had said, “I would like to ask Shah Rukh, how it feels to be No.2.” Then, SRK had taken it in a good spirit and once again, SRK proves that he has no time or interest in the game of words.

Read an excerpt from Aamir Khan’s blog which goes as,
"Shah Rukh is licking my feet and I am feeding him biscuits every now and then. What more can I ask for? Now, before you jump to any conclusions let me add that Shah Rukh is the name of our dog. And before you jump to any further conclusions let me add that I had nothing to do with naming him. In fact Shah Rukh is the dog of the caretakers of our house. When I bought this house it came with the caretakers and their dog! Apparently Shah Rukh (the actor) was shooting for a commercial in this house a few years ago, and that very day the caretakers bought a pup…, and named him Shah Rukh. What are the chances of me buying a house which comes with a dog called Shah Rukh!!!Some of my friends claim that I bought the house just because of the dog. I would have to be a serious fan of Shah Rukh’s to want to do that. Your guess…”

Even before signing off from his blog he takes one final dig at the Baadshah of Bollywood by saying, “Well Shah Rukh is once again begging for my attention, so let me get back to him. He is smelling too much, I think he needs a bath. “Heel boy, heel.”

On this Shahrukh again proves his maturity by choosing to close the controversy instead of bloating it. Says the King Khan of Bollywood: “Moving towards blogs is a way towards joining the journalist fraternity, I love journalists but I am an actor and would like to keep it that way.”

Shahrukh brushes aside all controversies by commenting: “Hum log hum umar hai — main, Salman, Aamir. Aur hum jab milte hain toh is se bhi ajeeb batein karte hai. (All three of us — Salman, Aamir and me are the same age and when we meet, we talk stranger stuff than this.) I have to take it with a sense of humour and I do have a sense of humour. If I can do it with others, then I should accept it.”

We guess that with SRK’s cool reaction like this, there could not be a better end to this dog-blog controversy. What say, pals?

BACHCHAN RAJ!

SARKAR RAJ is all set for a release on 6th June and unlike Ram Gopal Verma ki AAG which hardly seemed to create any positive energy around it, the latest Ramu venture is indeed managing to make heads turn in a positive manner.

Ramu's SARKAR RAJ, the Bachchan family film, is indeed turning out to be the most awaited film this summer by leaps and bounds. The film has been constantly in buzz for various reasons like sequel of acclaimed SARKAR, Aish-Abhi’s first film together post marriage; The Bachchan family film, strong characters by all the Bachchan members. Response to SARKAR RAJ has been widely positive till date which gives a very positive signal to this mega film coming from the maverick film maker.

Ramu agrees though that SARKAR RAJ is a complex project when compared to its prequel SARKAR. "If you look at SARKAR, it was a fairly simplistic tale. It had a basic plot of a son (Abhishek Bachchan) taking revenge against those who attacked his father (Amitabh Bachchan). Simple, isn't it? Of course there was a power game involved with political and underworld angle coming in as well but the basic germ of the plot was centered on revenge", says Ramu.

"SARKAR RAJ goes on a different trip in fact. Actually it doesn't even start from where SARKAR left. It is just another episode in the life of Nagres where the situations become far more complex. There is a conspiracy theory in the running which makes SARKAR RAJ a gritty affair", further informs Ramu.

bahu turned babe

That television’s most popular Bahu, Prachi Desai, is making her big screen debut with ‘Rock On’ opposite Farhan Akhtar is stale by now. That Prachi has gone for an image makeover has been all over the gossip columns for quite sometime now.
The latest one is that this 19 year old female has already bagged in her next project even before her debut film hits the screens. She has been signed as one of the female leads in Abbas-Mustan’s home production ‘Life Partner’ starring Fardeen Khan, Govinda, Tusshar Kapoor and Genelia D’Souza to be directed by Rumi Jaffrey.
Prachi confirmed the news saying, “Yes, I have signed the film but it’s too early to talk about it. I can’t reveal many details about Life Partner. All I can say is that when I heard the script, I loved it and am happy that I am a part of it.”
After having her full share of success in small screen, looks like Prachi is ready to sweep off the bigger screen too. Good going, Prachi!

SRK'S NEW LUV!

Yash Raj films had created much mystery and speculations about the girl who would be cast opposite SRK in their next mega venture ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’. The suspense now comes to an end with the announcement of Anushka Sharma’s name as the female lead for the film.

Anushka, 19 year old teenager, is a small time model from Bangalore. During the last Fashion Week, Anushka was one of the models picked for Wendell Roderick’s finale. Since then she has been doing product endorsements.

Talking about the choice, Yash Chopra said, “We were looking first and foremost for someone who could truly embody the spirit of small town Punjab and we know we have found her in Anushka Sharma. And while she has no previous acting experience, we have seen that unique spark in her that makes us confident that she will be a standout even opposite Shah Rukh.”

AAMIR

The star of popular TV soaps like KAHIN TO HOGA, KYA HADSA KYA HAQEEQAT and LEFT RIGHT LEFT - Rajeev Khandelwal - would be soon making his big screen debut. He would be seen in a film titled AAMIR, which is a 'UTV Spotboy' production. However, not many are aware that the film has Anurag Kashyap as it's creative producer. Anurag found the script of AAMIR quite interesting and also believed in Rajeev as an actor due to which he got involved with the film.

Rajeev plays the lead protagonist Aamir, who is a London based doctor. Dealing with the theme of terrorism, the film sees Aamir coming to meet his family in India. But little did he know that he would soon get involved in a conspiracy that would take the story to its thrilling finale.

AAMIR is directed by debutant Rajkumar Gupta who had earlier assisted Anurag Kashyap in NO SMOKING.

During his journey he faces different kinds of people making his trip to India hatke than what was expected. Sounds interesting? Will ‘Aamir’ emerge as a leader or get lost in the crowd? For answer watchout for this movie. Relief is, its not usual bollywood masala flick.

BREAK-UP : A boon

Shahid-Kareena breakup seems to have worked for everyone. Where Bebo and Saif are rocking, Shahid too seems to be going places. After pairing up with much mature Vidya Balan, the chocolate boy will now be seen with Sushmita Sen in a film to be directed by Shahid’s good friend Rohit.

The little birdie says that the production house Shemaroo has already shot some portions of the film with an international crew without giving a slightest hint to media. But the officials of Shemaroo Entertainment deny the news saying that the film will go on the floors in May and will be shot in a single start-to-finish schedule. The movie will be shot in Mumbai and also on some international locations.

Lets wait and watch the chemistry between Bollywood cute lad and sizzling beauty!

KYA PHIR MILENGE?

If you thought you would never be able to see the cute Shahid-Kareena pair again, there is something for you. Their delayed and almost shelved project ‘Milenge Milenge’ inspired by Hollywood’s romantic flick ‘Serendipity’ has revived again and Shahid has already started dubbing for the film. The film was supposed to release on this year’s valentines day but then….

Director Satish Kaushik confirmed the news saying, “He (Shahid) has already started dubbing for the film. Kareena will dub as soon as she returns from her overseas trip. Yes, the film does have elements of Serendipity.”

The movie had been shot even before ‘Jab We Met’ and just when everyone thought that it has been completely shelved, Boney Kapoor, the film’s producer, got Shahid and Kareena to spare a few days to dub for the film. However, since the film has been shot three years back you will get to see a fuller (read plumper) Kareena and a cuter (read kiddish) Shahid.

ORIGINAL CHOICES!

Now it can be told! Everyone knows that Fardeen Khan was initially supposed to enact the role that has been portrayed brilliantly by Akshaye Khanna in RACE. Also, Mallika Sherawat was the first choice for the role of Mini [eventually portrayed by Sameera Reddy], the dumb associate of the investigating officer. Not many know that the casting underwent many changes before it finally went to the actors we see on screen today. Read on…

To start with, when Fardeen Khan opted out of the project [the dates were clashing with HEYY BABYY], the makers approached John Abraham for the part. John heard the script, but declined the offer because he didn't want to portray a negative role [didn't he win accolades in DHOOM?]. The role went to Akshaye Khanna.

Before Bipasha Basu came into the picture, the role was initially offered to Priyanka Chopra. She too, like John, didn't like the idea of playing a negative role interesting [although she won tremendous praise for her part in Abbas-Mustan's AITRAAZ]. Bipasha was the next choice and when she heard the script, it was a 'Yes' instantly.

Anil Kapoor too wasn't the first choice for the part of the investigating officer. This role was first offered to Ajay Devgan, who loved the script, but felt that he wouldn't like to do a strong, intense film then. Akshay Kumar was approached next. The actor shares a terrific rapport with Abbas-Mustan, but he declined the role because he didn't want to play a secondary role.

AAMIR KHAN'S NEW LOOK

There is a popular saying in Bollywood that ‘Whatever Aamir ‘Perfectionist’ Khan does, he does not follow any style, because whatever he does, simply becomes a style in itself’. The latest one being that he has gone bald for his forthcoming film Ghajini, with the southern sensation Asin and the Bollywood hottie Jiah Khan paired opposite him.

He going bald had become the talk of the town for quite some time now. And the ‘day’ decided was his Birthday, which eventually got postponed. When the D-Day (or is it the B-Day- Bald Day) arrived, ‘Mr. Perfect’ Aamir ultimately bid good bye to his much loved hair, in the presence of his near and dear ones. And the person instrumental in this was the renowned celebrity hair stylist Avan Contractor, and the location was Aamir’s residence in Bandra. The ‘USP’ of this one and a half an hour ‘balding session’ was that, at the end of it all, at the behest of Aamir, Avan created a scar with the razor on Aamir’s head!

It looks quite ironical that it was the same Aamir who had gone full fledged with his locks in Mangal Pandey: The Rising. And now it is the same Aamir who has gone bald, though the common factor remains that both of these ‘hairstyles’ were not an overnight decision. Aamir had spent lots of time working out on these looks.

So, please do not be surprised if you suddenly find the young men going bald. Because you know that the reason is not the summer, or the dandruff and definitely not the lice, but it’s called the refreshing ‘Aamir slice’!!!

CRICKETTAINMENT

Bollywood and Cricket can’t seem to get enough of each other, it seems. With the formation of IPL teams, we are getting more and more of Crickettainment these days. Preity Zinta has roped in Daler Mehendi for the music video of her Mohali team. Also, the word doing rounds is that she plans to rope in the Deol family for the shoot of the video. Her video has a Punjabi feel in it.
On the other hand, King Khan has roped in long time buddy Rani Mukherjee and Bong bombshell Bipasha Basu to shake it for the music video of his IPL team, Kolkata Knight Riders. Bappi Lahiri is holding on the musical strings of the video.
Vijay Mallya’s Bangalore team is not far behind. Bollywood actresses Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone are set to dance in the music video for this team.

if classic films are remade with tv stars

Remakes of evergreen Hindi films were, are and will always be a hot proposition. But why only give movie stars the benefit of starring in them? The reach, popularity and acting histrionics of our telly actors is worthy enough for consideration. So we envisioned the new casting of some of our classic Bollywood flicks. So, here it goes…

Arth - Smriti Irani (Shabana Azmi), Kulbhushan Kharbanda (Ronit Roy), Shweta Tiwari (Smita Patel) and Raj Kiran (Cezzane Khan):
Who else can handle the author-backed, multi-layered and complex role of Shabana if not our telly stalwart Smriti ? Ronit as the ambitious director who cheats on his wife and Shweta as the schizophrenic movie star…waah! The perfect arsenal for a raw, hard-hitting, yet moving film

Guide - Juhi Parmar (Waheeda Rehman), Dev Anand (Varun Badola):
Whether breaking the metamorphic pot of social constraints or dancing precariously over a ledge in keeping with her dangerous new desires, Rosie`s character can be very well re-lived by the bindaas Juhi Parmar And Varun is capable of taking you through the smart-alecky guide`s journey of love, shame, guilt and salvation

Maine Pyar Kiya - Diwyanka Tripathi (Bhagyashree), Eijaz Khan (Salman Khan), Apara Mehta (Reema Lagoo):
Diwyanka has all the ingredients to click with the Indian milieu as the seedi-saadhi, homely and soft-spoken Suman. One word that aptly describes Sallu is `hot` and Eijaz too shares the same label, right? The glamy and talented Apara fits well in Reema`s character which in MPK, redefined the look and persona of `ma` in Indian cinema

Devdas - Shahrukh (Rajeev Khandelwal), Aishwarya (Aamna Sharif), Madhuri (Shweta Kwatra):
Television`s hottest and much talked about duo Rajeev-Aamna are as if simply tailor made for this classic tragic love saga. Why Shweta? Cuz she has become a pro at playing the other woman onscreen (Kkusum, Jassi…Kumkum) And yes she can dance too. Proof - Nach Baliye 2!

Chandni -Sangeeta Ghosh ( Sridevi ), Rishi Kapoor (Hussain ), Vinod Khanna (Manav Gohil):
Sangeeta can convincingly play the contrast personas as required in this film; a chulbuli Sri in the first half and a sombre, heart-broken one in the later. Not to forget the slight resemblance - almond eyes and the oomph factor. A fab dancer and a full-of-life lover boy, Rishi`s portrayal can rightly be justified by Hussain. Coming to Manav, the suit-boot wala, reticent businessman look is apt for his frame.(I can already visualize him crooning lagi aaj sawan in these rains.)

"NOT DROPPED BECAUSE OF FORM"

A disappointed Sourav Ganguly speaks exclusively on his ODI omission, says it wasn't because of his batting.
Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly has had a dream comeback to internatioanl cricket but just when he was in top form, Ganguly was dropped from the ODI squad. Sourav Ganguly opens his heart out on his disappointment at being left out from the ODIs.

Why aren't you playing against Australia?

I think, the selectors will have a better idea. But all I can say, it's not on the basis of form, which is in my control. I can only get the runs, the rest is not in my hands.

What was your reaction when you heard you were dropped?

I was a bit surprised because I didn't expect it. As in both forms of the game whether it be in Test or One-day, I scored nearly 2500 runs in one year. I was a bit surprised but that's the way it is.

What did you tell them?

They just asked me whether I wanted to continue playing One-day cricket. I said, 'Yes, at least for the next 7-8 months'. Since there's not much of One-day cricket in this year, and the rest of the year is full of Test cricket. So I wanted to play till September (2008), and then take a call because at some stage, we wouldn't have gone on to play the 2011 World Cup.

Didn't you discuss it with anyone?

No.

Over the last two to three years, more has been written about Sourav Ganguly's off-field activities, his lobbies, the people favouring him and so on. How do you react to all this?

It's all very irritating. I need to be treated as a player and that's every player's right. To be honest since 2005, after I got dropped and I lost my captaincy, lot of things have been other than cricket which is not required for anybody whether it's me (I've played for 12-13 years) or a newcomer. These things are not required and it doesn't happen anywhere else in the world. I need to be judged on my cricket.

sidhuism

Maximum value. That’s what one gets when dealing with Navjot Singh Sidhu. So be it maximum value (six) for a cricket shot, maximum electoral votes, maximum laughter and even maximum answers to a single query!
Apart from sharing his cricketing expertise, Sidhu is currently entertaining viewers on the fun-filled show Funjabbi Chak De . Heres an insight into the former cricketer, versatile television personality, and a Member of Parliament.

Navjot Singh Sidhu is hitting more sixes on TV than he did on the cricket field.

Let’s put it this way. 19 years of international cricket, 6 years of commentary, four years in politics and then Laughter Challenge. I reckon Laugther Challenge has given me a new identity. When I played cricket, people called me ‘Sixer Sidhu’. Now wherever I go, they call me ‘Oye Guru’. I’ve believed that there’s no permanent name and fame than the endeavour to give happiness to mankind.

At the cost of laughing at yourself?

Anyone who gives is a daata(giver) while one who takes is a beggar. Sleep and you snore alone. If you can make one happy at your own cost, it’s worth its weight in gold.

We haven’t’ seen you in the commentary box for a long time. Any particular reason?

At the moment, I have my hands in many pies. The busy man has no time for tears. After all, I can only handle that much. Doing commentary will require me to do travel for around 10 months of a year. When entrusted with any responsibility, I make sure that I enjoy it. Besides, I’ve lived out of a suitcase for far too long.

Does it mean we shall never see you in the commentator’s box?

It’s probable but not possible. The only way I see a return to commentary is by quitting politics, which at the moment looks unlikely.

Boycott? What about the verbal volleys with Sir Geoffrey ?

Geoffrey was the big bully in the com-box and he felt that he had the divine right to pin down any Indian who sat besides him. However, I tore off his pants, ripped him apart. Having said that, I have high regards for him both as a player and a commentator. I rate him as the best commentator alongside Ian Chappell.

Laughter Challenge was a huge hit but the same cannot be said about Funjabbi Chak De . It’s generated very low TRPs.

When Funjabbi … started, the focus was more on the acts than stand-up comedy. These acts were not the character of Laughter Challenge. We were quick to realize this and so stand-up comedy replaced the acts. Ever since this has occurred, the show is slowly gaining momentum. The last 10 episodes have been really good. The comedy has come back.

How do you rate Mandira on the show?

Mandira is a television genius. She makes everyone feel comfortable, never puts anyone down. She has this charismatic, magnetic aura around her which in the visual media pulls the viewer to her. She is the spark which ignites the show.

Mandira says that she doesn’t let you do all the talking. That’s quite an achievement for her.

(Laughs) I give her ample space. Here (Funjabbi ..), it’s an ocean. There’s space for everyone. Democracy is like a barber’s chair, it fits everyone’s bottom. We share a great chemistry and have mutual respect for each other. Besides, I can’t do everything all by myself.

Parizaad, Shonali and now Mandira. You always have beautiful girls for company.

(Laughs) A drop of honey always catches more flies than a gallon of vinegar. I’m honey man.

Sidhu’s ‘Sidhuism’ and his style of humour have become monotonous. Comment.

Change is not necessarily progress. A mark of failure is trying to please everyone and he who tries pleasing everyone, pleases none. My father always stated that there’s no solution to what people have to say about you. It’s the tree which is laden with fruit that is pelted with stones. If I can please 60 people, I needn’t worry about the remaining 40. Trouble arises when you go unnoticed.

And what about politics?

Politics to me is a mission and not a profession. Mission presents the larger perspective. In the long run, I see myself settling down in the quicksand of politics. The more you try to wriggle out of it, the more you get sucked into it. Politics is a powerful tool to make a difference to people’s life.

Is Sidhu a sentimental politician?

There is no human being who is not sentimental. You’re not a robot. If Kapil Dev didn’t cry like a baby, no one would have believed his innocence. That did not belittle him. People have this notion that celebrities care less about emotions. We are like normal human beings.

What are the challenges that lie ahead of you?

The biggest challenge for a politician is to erase the image of the ugly politician. People have lost faith in politicians. I want to bring this trust back. There are rich people but a good name is worth all the riches in life. The people of Amritsar have entrusted their faith in me, thus it’s important for me to live up to their exceptions.

Hasn’t this (politics) been an overwhelming ride for you?

Life itself has been very overwhelming for me. God has been kind to me. Once you leave cricket, the white flannels go off and 2-3 years down the line, no one recognizes you. There are great cricketers who have become forlorn entities. Somewhere down the line every hero becomes a zero. I reckon, I still enjoy that recognition.

movie review-SUNDAY

DIRECTOR: Rohit Shetty

MUSIC: Sandeep Chowta, Suroor (Pakistani Band), Daler Mehndi, Shibani Kashyap, Raghav

Sachar, Amar Mohile

LYRICS: Farhad, Sajid, Kamran Bari, Daler Mehndi, Virag Mishra, Aditya Dhar

STARRING: Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Ayesha Takia, Irrfan Khan, Anjana Sukhani

There is a cold blooded murder. Murli Sharma suspiciously hovers in the background near the place where the body is found. Great beginning. Director Rohit Shetty deserves a clap, just for the beginning. For the next half hour the movie meanders along. You see goons who can easily pass off as buffoons trying to kill Ayesha Takia. She has no clue why, nor do we. During this time Rohit Shetty gets busy sketching the character played by Ajay Devgan. I guess, even he has no clue as to what to do. The end is something you would want someone to sit near you and explain! And yes, Murli Sharma is the one who had tucked Takia into her bedroom after finding her wandering on the streets of Delhi. What he was doing at the crime scene in the first place no one knows!!! The story is about a day which goes missing in Ayesha’s life which connects what is happening to her now. It appears that Takia had gone to a night club with her friend on Saturday night and her drink was ‘spiked’ by two guys. From then on she spirals out of control on the streets of Delhi meeting five people along the way. The Sixth one tucks her in bed. She sleeps the entire Sunday. That explains the two milk packets kept outside her door on Monday morning. Makes sense? Not yet, right?. Forget it.

predictability of telly soaps

Our Television dramas indeed takes too many dramatic turns driving most viewers’ bananas. Just when everything seems to go fine, we see the most outrageous twist in the storyline. To predict a soap story line is like walking on a two edged sword where the exercise can only hurt viewers’ sanity. This article recaps some of the most run of the mill clichéd tracks that we see. Here is your chance to voice your views on them, vent out your pent up steam and have a blast. So judge what you want to see..!!

Reincarnation Vs Leap

The mantra of Television shows and producers these days is to introduce a “leap” in the tale every time there is a drop in TRP rating to recapture viewers’ attention. And why not, as most of the "Leaps" have indeed infused fresh blood into their shows and sent the TRPs sky rocketing!! Reincarnations - a popular concept in bollywood, somehow has not been able to weave out the same magic in the television world. Stories like Aaj bhi Ateet and Pyaar ke do naam, Kaajal are best examples. So if you are given a choice, what would you opt for – a leap or a reincarnation. By the way, why are leaps mostly of 20 years, why not some other digit?

Mother India Vs Crying Mother

If on one side we have Maa Tulsi leading a band of firebrand Mother India’s propagating naari shakti, then on the other side we have the perennially crying ladies bearing the brunt of the antagonism meted out to them by their in-laws or bitter halves. If one side you have the naari shakti morcha leaders like Tulsi, Parvati, Bani (Durga), Vidya, Kumkum, Kasturi on the “Roote Murti” side there is Prachi, Laxmi, Anupama or Saloni, playing the role of ultimate sacrificing queens!! What do you all think about this? You prefer the fearless woman or the tearful one?

Triangle Vs Quadrangle

There is nothing like love stories with happy endings!! But in our television serials, we have never seen ending love stories! As SRK says..in OSO "Picture abhi baaki hai mere dost"!! They have too many angles to keep the story going on for ages. In Kyunki - Tulsi loved Mihir but there was Mandira and then Thakral, in Kayamath Prachi loved Neev, then Milind, but Neev still loves Prachi; in Kasamh se, Jai loved Pia then Bani, but Bani always loved Jai, Pia loved Pushkar then fell for Jai and Meera has also entered the fray. Confused!! Well this is the circle of frustration for the viewers to help spiral the TRPs. So what do you prefer to watch - love Triangle, Quadrangle or circles? Sorry no straight line here.

Village Vs City

This is latest trend which is very popular among the directors these days as all the shows of television are being based on Villages or on small cities. Be it Sangam, Amber Dhara, Salam Zindagi, all started from a small village. Now even the new channels have launched with the same theme. What do we prefer to watch, Village or City?

Biological Vs Adopted Kids

In most of the soaps if we have one Biological Kid, then there are 3 adopted ones. Whether it is in Kyunki, Kasauti or any other soap, this is the “Kahani serials serials ki”. What is our take on all the adaptations of adoption Vs biological?

Wild Card Vs New Entrant

If one thing in reality shows drive the viewers wild – it is the introduction of the wild card entry or a new entrant making a direct entry at an advanced stage. Which contestant do you prefer -those who have been voted out in the past and making a return or those who come up at the later stage and get direct entry to the finals?
